Two Placentia girls got to travel to Quebec at the end of August to participate in the Eastern Canadian Softball Championship under 14 peewee girls fast pitch team.

Jenna Haley and Brittany McCarthy both trained in St. John’s over the summer and were picked to be part of the Eastern Canadian team that played a tournament in St. Basile, Quebec from Aug. 25-28.

For both girls the trip was a first time experience and a good one.

Haley, who lives in Southeast and McCarthy, from Ferndale, have been involved with plenty of sporting activities over the years in the Placentia area including soccer, figure skating and other sports.

But softball, and fast pitch in particular, captured their imaginations and challenged their skill set.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Haley. “We lost all our games but it was still a really good experience.”

For Haley, travelling to another province with a group of hand-picked players from Newfoundland and Labrador was one of the highlights of her summer.

Haley, a pitcher for the team, said she learned a lot from her experience, and was thrilled she got to participate in the out of province tournament.

McCarthy echoed that sentiment, and added she hoped she would be able to do it again.
