Wiarton Red Devils of Ontario captured the 2010 Eastern Canadian Midget Boys Fastpitch Softball Championship on Sunday, August 29 with a 5-0 decision over Guysborough Athletics of Nova Scotia in the contest at the William P. Hogan softball diamond in Dunville.
Travis Jones, named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament, pitched the win over Rene D’Entremont. D’Entremont picked up the top pitcher award based on round robin play only with a 3-0 win-lose record. He pitched 22.1 total innings, gave up only 10 hits, walked six and struck out 45 batters. He allowed only one run which wasn’t earned and posted two shutouts. Tristan Richard, also of Nova Scotia, took home the batting title, also based on round robin play, only with a 10 for 19 performance at the plate for a .526 average.
Nova Scotia earned a bye into the championship game by virtue of finishing first in the standings after round robin action with a 5-1 record. Ontario was 4-2 while the Newfoundland and Labrador entry went winless at 0-6.
Ontario pounded Newfoundland and Labrador 11-4 in five innings in semi-final play.
The tournament went ahead despite the forced withdrawal of the host Placentia entry due to a ruling by the current board of directors of Softball Newfoundland and Labrador that stated that any player who played at Midget Nationals with the Newfoundland and Labrador team earlier this summer were ineligible to play in the Eastern Canadians.
The Placentia entry required the services of two local players who played with the Newfoundland and Labrador entry at the Midget Nationals in Stafford, Ontario earlier this summer just to have enough players to participate with the host team in the tournament, but the SNL ruling blocked the athletes from playing, thus forcing the tournament to be put off without a host team.
The Newfoundland and Labrador entry at the championships, which featured Placentia native Troy Leonard, won the bronze medal despite going 0-7 overall in the tourney.
Despite the absence of a host team, the tournament’s organizing committee did a stellar job putting off a great tournament under such difficult circumstances and should be congratulated and commended for their usual great job.
