Matthew Power captured first place at 2010 Newfoundland and Labrador Junior High Boys Cross-Country Championship. The race was held in Ferryland on May 21 with approximately 33 runners. Power is a Grade 9 student at St. Anne's Academy. He was very pleased with the race's outcome.
"The race was probably 10 minutes long. In the last kilometre I lost my shoe and had to run with only one shoe on. It was hard to race with one shoe. I got blisters from it but I knew I was in first and I didn't want to get in second," he said.
Power's shoe became unlaced and he knew it was slowing him down. So he kicked the shoe off his foot in mid-run and continued the race, ending up with the gold medal for the race.
Power said he loves running and is good at it, a factor shown with this win.
Power trains three to four times a week and plans to continue running next season.
