Fatima player named MVP at Wendys Classic

In early December 2009, Mount Pearl Senior High was host to the Wendy's Classic basketball tournament. The well-known and highly rated tournament involved 12 teams from all across the island competing for the prize. The 12 highly competitive and talented teams battled it out on the Mount Pearl Senior High court in a grand show of true sportsmanship, skill, and great teamwork. The Fatima Academy Royals battled with the Barons from Bishops College High School for the position alongside Gonzaga in the championship showdown. Unfortunately for the blue and white team, Bishops defeated the Royals with a final score of 80 to 71. In the end, the Barons walked away as champions of the Wendy's Classic.
However, one particular Fatima player at the Wendy's Classic stood out among the rest.
Player Bradley Power, Grade 12 student and co-captain of the Fatima Royals team, was awarded the coveted Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the tournament. Power scored an outstanding average of 30 points with an additional 10 rebounds in his final game.
"Bradley worked hard for this," said Fatima coach Jeff Ivany. "He is an amazing player both in games and in his practices. In everything he does, he is a team player. Whether it is a practice game, showing younger team members plays, a home game, or a high scale tournament like Wendy's Classic."
Mr. Ivany has been Power's basketball coach since the student was in Grade 5, and is pleased to admit that he has not only known the MVP winner as a student and a basketball player, but as a person.
"I'm pleased to admit that I know the same attitude he has on the basketball floor is carried when he steps off it."
Power is modest in his capture of the MVP position in the Wendy's Classic tournament of 2009. He remained adamant the wins Fatima had in this tournament were a direct result of all team members involved.
"The 30 point average wouldn't be possible if the other players weren't there to assist me, and our team's well-planned and practiced defense helped with the 10 rebounds that were made," said Power.
Power was asked what attitude is needed to win MVP.
"I guess you should just start playing as hard and fast as you can, and keep playing that way until the buzzer goes because even if you lose, it will be worth it," Power said. "Also, that way you can't look back and think, 'I should have done this.'"
