It was an exciting and intense weekend of senior boys' basketball Nov. 13-15 at Fatima Academy in St. Bride's at the Bridget Power Memorial tournament.
St. Catherine's took the tournament in the end, beating Roncalli in the championship game with a 76-75 score.
Seven teams competed in the tournament from Roncalli in Avondale, Booth Memorial in St. John's, Stella Maris from Trepassey, Carbonear Collegiate, St. Catherine's and St. Lawrence as well as Fatima Academy, hosts of the tournament.
Coach Jeff Ivany, assistant coach Krista Ivany and athletic director Lisa Courtney were the convenors for the tournament and said all games were highly competitive, and at times, very intense, right up to and including the championship game when St. Catherine's came back in the second half to defeat Roncalli by one point.
"The host team, the Fatima Royals gave an excellent performance, winning two of their games and putting up a great fight against 4A teams Roncalli and Booth, who both pulled off narrow wins against the Royals," said Ms. Courtney.
The tournament is named after the late Bridget Power who was a Special Needs teacher for many years at Fatima. She spent much of her spare time helping students who were struggling academically and nurturing those who needed some extra care. She was very much loved and appreciated by the community.
Thursday saw only one game played, with a score of 76-66 for Roncalli against St. Catherine's.
Friday's games included Fatima beating Stella Maris 83-67, Carbonear edging out over Booth 64-63, Booth beating St. Lawrence 67-41, and Fatima overtaking St. Lawrence 83-59.
On Saturday, Roncalli beat St. Lawrence 63-37, St. Catherine's was ahead of Stella Maris 60-48, Booth edged past Fatima 76-73, Carbonear beat Stella Maris 73-66, Roncalli over Fatima 81-77 and St. Catherine's beating Carbonear 85-59.
