Battening down the hatches

Heading into hurricane season now and as this editorial is being written, we’ve got warnings from the weather watchers that we can expect some stormy weather this weekend.

After experiencing Hurricane Igor last year, many of us are not taking any chances. People are lined up at grocery stores around the area, stocking up, getting water, making sure there is enough food to last a few days.

While that storm will be over by the time our readership gets this edition of the Charter, it is a good idea to always be prepared for extreme weather, especially this time of year, apparently.

Last year’s Igor deprived people of food, water and transportation for a number of days, so it is a good idea to be prepared for that eventuality at least.

Here in this province, traditionally we have been prepared for winter storms, but things are changing all the time, and those winter storms just don’t seem to come with the frequency that these hurricanes seem to be hitting in late summer and early fall, which I don’t recall happening when I was a kid, at all.

But, it is happening now and we had better learn to adapt to the changing nature of the weather on this planet. According to some, this change is one of the first to come. We shall see what comes next.

Be safe this year, stock up on supplies like water and food, candles and batteries, and hunker down when appropriate. Let’s see if we can get through this weather without too many damages to property and without any loss of life.

Good luck to all.
