Environment Canada is warning the public that a line of thunderstorms that developed west of Terra Nova Park is moving eastward.

In a severe thunderstorm warning for the Clarenville area and vicinity, it says these storms will produce heavy downpours, strong wind gusts and possibly hail.

“Driving conditions through these areas will be treacherous in thunderstorms,” Environment Canada warns, adding that some severe thunderstorms produce tornadoes.

In the St. John’s area, Environment Canada is forecasting a few showers tonight with thundershower,  changing to periods of drizzle near midnight. Rainfall is expected to amount to 5 mm, with 20 mm in thundershowers.

Winds are forecast to be southwest 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h, becoming northwest 30 km/h near midnight. The low overnight is forecast to be around 12 Celsius.
