Anniversary of first public performance of the Ode to Newfoundland.

On (January 21, 1902) at the Casino Theatre in St. John’s the song, “Newfoundland” now known as the “Ode To Newfoundland” was sung for the very first time. The new song was greeted enthusiastically. A newspaper reporter who attended the show at the theatre knew that he had heard something very special; he speculated that the song that he had heard “may be chosen as the Colony’s own anthem.” He was right, in August 1979; Royal Assent was given to legislation adopting the Ode to Newfoundland as the official provincial anthem of the province. I was reviewing the Ode to Newfoundland and found it an little odd that there was a line "Their payer we raise to heav’n above,". I was always that it was 'prayer' not 'payer'

Why it took so long to be made OFFICIAL anthem of Newfoundland is beyond me. When I was attending school 1945-1957 in Grand Falls we always sang the ODE and God Save the Queen at all the schools major functions. I would hope that every school in Newfoundland will start off their school day on the 21st with the ODE.
