RCMP across the province will be engaged in Operation Impact this coming weekend.

This mission, being carried out by  police agencies across the country, is a zero-tolerance enforcement-driven initiative designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures.

The goal is to save lives and reduce injury by making roads safer through enforcement and education.

Operation Impact involves of targeted enforcement in the areas of impaired driving, seatbelt use and aggressive driving, noted a RCMP press release.

These activities will be carried out over the Thanksgiving Day holiday weekend when traffic volume is expected to increase on our roadways.

Operation Impact was designed to remind drivers across Canada to consciously consider safety whenever they get behind the wheel.

Drivers are encouraged to ensure all passengers are properly restrained in their vehicle.

Police will be checking to make sure motor vehicle operators refrain from drinking and driving, that they are paying attention to the road at all times and refraining from aggressive driving behavior.

To facilitate provincial Operation Impact activities, members of RCMP Traffic Services along with members of local RCMP detachments will be conducting a number of checkpoints throughout the province over the holiday weekend.

I think this is always a good idea to do. furthermore, I believe that all drivers should be re-tested every so many years...think about it...you get your licence at 17 , then after 30 years of driving, even if you've never had an accident, do you think you have bad habits that could cause an accident in the right/wrong conditions? so many accidents are from driver error...you will only get away with bad habits and errors until you don't get away with it... retest everyone and there will be a massive reduction in accidents.

The road block Friday at rush hour between Lab City and Wabush needs to be investigated by the civilian review board. This was insane. Obstruction of peoples right to movement should not be tolerated. How many drunk drivers did they stop going home from work?

I really don't think that you see the BIG picture. They were trying to make a point and have contact with a higher level of traffic. Just because some of the traffic were persons coming from work that doesnt mean that EVERYONE was travelling from work. I feel so sorry t hat this was an inconvience for you. Did you have something to hide?????

Refrain from DRINKING and also from DRIVING. This means no cars at all on the roads. The only way to be safe these days.
