The 14th annual Genesis Employment Corporation Employer and Supporter Recognition Event, held at the Placentia Bay Cultural Centre July 19 drew approximately 55 people to the ceremony and barbecue held after the event.
Jane Canning was the emcee for the evening, which opened with her introduction and observation that June was supported employment month, and this area is certainly making the concept a success.
“We are making it work, with your support,” she stated.
Canning brought greetings from Avalon MP Scott Andrews and Human Resources, Labour and Employment Minister Darin King, both of whom were unable to attend.
Placentia-St. Mary’s MHA Felix Collins brought greetings from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Collins noted that the work done by Genesis Employment Corporation is some of the most positive in any community that he’s seen. He said the partnering they do for community building is greatly appreciated by many and the people who work there deserve a big pat on the back for all they do.
“Congratulations to all, especially the employers. Keep up the good work,” said Collins.
Kelly Foote from Human Resources, Labour and Employment brought a greeting from that department and Councilor Wayne Power brought greetings and congratulations from the town of Placentia.
Emcee Jane Canning then presented the 10-year service award to an employer, this year, Career Information Resource Centre (CIRC) for their involvement in this program for so long. Genesis client Alice Hartson came forward to accept the award on behalf of CIRC, and too the to microphone to mention how much she loves working there.
Client Barb Linehan the came forward to offer appreciation from the clients and to thank employers with help from MHA Felix Collins. Regina Somers made presentations to employers and Genesis director Leonard Hickey helped make the presentations to the co-workers, along with Michelle Somers. Roseanne Collins and Terrena White made the presentations to the board members and Angie Pittman presented the Cindy Watts Award to Shawn Fillier, who works at the Argentia Management Authority (AMA). Fillier was not in attendance so his co-worker accepted the award on his behalf, and noted that Fillier is an integral part of their team.
Following all the presentations, a barbecue of hot dogs and hamburgers, along with plenty of salads was held, followed by local music and a dance.
