In late 2009, the community council of Branch released a five-page newsletter to keep the residents up-to-date on council proceedings and upcoming events, which included a variety of announcements such as the public meeting taking place at the community center on Jan. 17, and the anxiously awaited return of the community's 'Singing Kitchen,' on Jan. 23.
As a part of Branch's sense of community, the council is also offering an exciting challenge to their youth in grades Kindergarten to Level III - a contest involving students creating a flag to represent their community. The winner is set to receive a great prize.
One of the issues presented in the report of particular interest to the community is the status of the community's garbage dump, and what will happen when the new system begins in 2010.
Like other places across the province, the community's garbage dump will be closing with residents having to pay approximately $130 annually for garbage removal. Branch's long time garbage collector, Gussie Power completed his last route through the community on Thursday, Jan. 31.
Branch's Volunteer Fire Department was also very pleased to announce that they had received funding of over $14,000 for modern, vital fire equipment. These volunteers also hosted a Fireman's Ball on New Year's Eve at the community center.
The newsletter also provides an update on the council's journey to providing clean water to the residents, noting that clean water was still a priority, and as always, the council is working diligently to make it a reality.
Along with the return of the annual 'Singing Kitchen,' Branch will also see the return of the 'Hall Walkers Club,' led by volunteer Laura Nash. Such a club offers usage of the community center as a safe and warm area to get in some exercise and socialization during the long winter months. Branch's contemporary exercise equipment will also be made available during the 'Hall Walkers Club' and on Wednesday nights with the use of a sign up sheet.
As well, aerobics will be returning with Donna McGrath as leader and hosted by Branch's Recreation Committee.
As the community's council prepares for the year ahead and another municipal term they have bid farewell to a long time council member, Mary Leonard and welcomed a new face to the council, Alice Mooney.
