Winter on the Cape Shore has always seen a variety of outdoor activities for those of all ages. With wide open country landscapes and plenty of ponds the Cape Shore is an ideal haven for winter lovers.

Branch's Recreation Committee has recently decided to provide the community with a safe skating rink for those sunny winter days and since it's opening day on Jan. 23 it has hosted hockey games for adults as well as a young skater's first lesson on the ice.

The rink, which is situated on the outskirts of the community measures 100 by 50 metres and was put in place as a way to keep the youth of the community safe.

"The idea for a rink came up while the committee was chatting about strategies on how to keep our youth safe," committee member Kelly Power explained. " I think it will be used by both the young and old of the community."

She said on its opening day, there were people of all ages enjoying the new rink.

The rink will be ready for use every year during the winter months and will return with the freezing temperatures. While it has only been in use for a short amount of time, already the support from the community's youth is evident in the skate marks left behind by juvenile hockey players.

Thirteen-year old Angela Nash is very excited about the rink.

"Skating out there it is wicked!" Nash said. "I love it. There is loads of room to skate and I think it was an excellent idea to put a skating rink in Branch because there are not many places to skate."

Branch's Recreation Committee has been working hard to promote safe, healthy living in the community targeting both young and old. Along with the skating rink, they have provided the community basketball court with new nets, opened the community center for fitness sessions twice a week, hosted aerobics, as well as annual barbecues along with safety presentations for youth from the RCMP. The committee believes in providing the youth of the town with an active childhood in their rural community along with promoting healthy lifestyles.
