In 2012, Placentia marks the 350th anniversary of the French landing on these shores, which happened in 1662.
To help celebrate the occasion, a number of people in the Placentia area are working on plans for a Come Home Year to be held in Placentia for 2012 that same year, to really make the event something to remember.
Donna Griffin is one of the organizers, along with Margie Hatfield, heritage and tourism director for the town of Placentia.
Ms. Griffin said the celebrations will include not only the town of Placentia but surrounding communities like Fox Harbour, Ship Harbour and Point Verde and will extend to include people who were with the U. S. Navy as well.
"We were talking about the possibilities during the Laval Come Home Year," Ms. Griffin said, "and Margie and I kept talking about it. Most people we spoke to thought it was a great idea."
While the planning is really just beginning, organizers are seeking input and assistance from the public on all aspects of the planning. For more information, or to offer assistance, please contact Margie Hatfield at 227-2151, ext. 226 or email her at mhatfield@placentia.ca, or Anita O'Keefe at 227-2151, ext. 243 or by email at culturaloffice@persona.ca, or by contacting ecollins@personainternet.com.
