Dunville native writes inspirational book

Paul M. White has an interesting hobby - he likes to help people feel good.

Mr. White, originally from Dunville, believes that the perception you have of life can help you change how you feel. This view, as well as more philosophies on life, can be found in his book, "Fishing for Reality; Catching Helpful Ideas That WILL Make a Difference for YOU."

However, the author hadn't always lived his life positively.

"I went to university, and when I finished I was lost and stuck in a world that seemed to be unforgiving and uncertain. I was always searching for things and looking in the wrong direction. So I put the focus back on me and I went searching inside and I found that a lot of my grandfather's wisdom I had grown up with was so true and so much needed. So when I started to put that into practice big things happened. I started to make the changes and life changed," recalled Mr. White.

So when I started to put that into practice big things happened. I started to make the changes and life changed," recalled Mr. White.

It was the words of wisdom his grandfather, Skipper Michael Joseph Bruce, passed down that inspired Mr. White to live positively.

"At the end of the day he was a skipper on his father's schooner. North America was founded based on the cod fishery and people came here to fish. A lot of his wisdom came from his father. And I can pick up any of those self-help books and I read through them, and it's unique because he lived it. I mean he didn't just talk about it he lived it daily on the high seas. The big message was in life leadership - the real ship you're leading is the ship called yourself. I mean once you figure that out the rest is easy," said Mr. White.

It took Mr. White about two years to complete this book. He decided to write this book to share the philosophies that he follows in life.

"Basically, it has two purposes: one, it's a starter book for people who want to tap into their own self development, and two, there's a lot of people on those self-development, improvement paths. There's a lot of ideas they could use, like, some of my grandfather's basic nuggets of wisdom that will never ever go out dated," he commented.

Mr. White is a mental health counselor, inspirational speaker and a substitute teacher. For more information check out Mr. White's website at www.paulwhite.ca. Copies of the book will be sold at the Jerseyside-Ferndale Come Home Year.
