Supported Employment is still going strong in Placentia and was celebrated at the 12th Annual Employer/Supporter Recognition Event at the Star of the Sea Hall on Feb. 24.
Des Linehan, chairperson of Genesis Employment Corporation was the Master of Ceremonies at the afternoon event and welcomed everyone to the event, sponsored by Genesis Employment Corporation and the Argentia Area Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Linehan talked about the contribution supported employment has in a community, including and helping people obtain work who had, years ago, been excluded because of developmental disabilities. With 12 years of supported employment behind them, Genesis is looking forward to many more.
Mr. Linehan brought greetings from Avalon MP Scott Andrews as well as Human Resources, Labour and Employment (HRLE) Minister Susan Sullivan. Guest speakers included Placentia-St. Mary's MHA Felix Collins, Placentia town councilor Kevin Power, Rick Healey of Service Canada, job broker with HRLE, Debbie Mercer and Harvey Brenton with the Argentia Area Chamber of Commerce.
The town of Placentia was presented a certificate for providing 10 years of supported employment at the town, which currently employs three individuals through Genesis, including Perpetua Collins, Tony Upshall and Vince Walsh.
Presentations were also made to employers, supporters, co-workers and board members, who, throughout the year, have provided support and encouragement to employees and the corporation.
The Employer Merit Award was presented to Beachside Manor, which currently has three employees through Genesis on staff and owner Dan Meade said he's hoping to be able to hire a couple more workers in the near future.
"They are such good employees, who always are on time and really enjoy their work," said Mr. Meade. "It is a pleasure to hire them, and they do a great job."
After the presentations, finger foods and beverages were served and congratulations offered to all award winners.
