Fox Harbour Mayor Jack Maher is not impressed with what he believes are “prowling wolves” in his community who sleep all day and “prowl all night.”
His comments came after receiving a call from The Charter to talk about a vehicle fire that happened at the end of September in that sleepy little outport.
A small car was burned to a crisp very close to the Roman Catholic Church in Fox Harbour, part of Our Lady of Angels Parish. Because the fire raged so hard and fast, it singed the grass in front of the aged church, and could have created even more havoc in town had it been a windy night, as the church could have easily gone up in flames as well, said Maher, who doubles as the town’s Fire Chief.
Maher believes there are elements, some young people in the town who are causing general damage and mayhem in the community when most people are fast asleep, snug in their beds.
“They come out at night and prowl the town,” said Maher. “It is especially bad when the moon is full.”
Maher said there is not much the town can do about the criminal element in the town, and that it is only the RCMP who really has the power to deal with the problem.
Constable Todd Hussey with the Placentia RCMP said the matter is under police investigation and charges could be pending, depending on the outcome of the investigation. He also noted the fire was monitored by local volunteers as it was happening, and that police were not called right away, but that the peril to the nearby church was minimal.
